Details: A large and classic example of a 17th century bronze image of possibly the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara. The bodhisattva is seated in Dhyanasana with his right hand in Vitarkamudra holding a small spoon and his left hand at his navel holding an ambrosia vessel. His gilded bare chest is adorned with cascading bejeweled necklaces save for a long layered robe with foliate borders draped over his shoulders and fanning past the legs in even folds. His face is finely cast with a contemplative and compassionate downcast expression, flanked by elongated ears with floret earrings, below an ornate openwork crown centered by a small seated Amitabha Buddha and surrounded by falling locks of knotted hair down over his shoulders. Age: 17th Century. Height: 27cm. Remarks: As can be seen from the above photos the piece has retained much of its gilding around the face and chest and has traces of lacquer over much of its surface. There is also some unrestored damage to the front of the legs. |
