Late 17th-18th Century Sino Tibetan Gilt Bronze Buddha
Details: A finely painted and detailed example of a late 17th-18th century Qing Sino-Tibetan gilt bronze image of the historical Buddha. Buddha is seated crossed legged in padmasana (the lotus or diamond posture) with both naturalistically cast hands held in front of his chest in the turning of the dharma wheel or the teaching mudra (dharma chakra pravatana mudra). His finely painted eyes are serenely concentrated above a confident and inwardly contented smile radiating wisdom and compassion from his rounded ethnically Chinese face. His well proportioned powerful and slightly chubby frame is covered in a monastic garment similar to that of the first members of the Buddhist community, who wore clothes made of worn out rags sewn together.

This image belongs with the group of Sino Tibetan sculptures of the early Chinese Qing period. There are many elements of the Qing style in this piece, such as the particular ornamental floral design on the borders of each patch and the typical pleat folds of the drapery over the Buddha’s chest. The lack of lotus petals going all the way around the base is also symptomatic of the Qing period.

Age: Late 17th -18th Century (Qing Period).

Height: 16 cm.
