Details: An attractive and elegant example of a Tibetan gilt copper alloy image of Tara the female Bodhisattva of compassion. She is seated in lalitasana with her right foot resting on a lotus pad upon an inscribed double lotus pedestal. She is bejeweled with her hands in varadha and vitarka mudra with lotus stems curling round both her shoulders. Tara’s face is pretty but troubled, her attractive almond eyes downcast and filled with empathy and compassion for all beings caught in the rut of Sansara. As can be seen from the above photos the bracelets, anklets, parts of the crown and the robes are inlaid with silver. According to Buddhist tradition, Tara was born from the compassionate tears of the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara. It is said that he wept as he looked upon the suffering of the world, and his tears formed a lake from which a lotus emerged. When the lotus opened, the goddess Tara was revealed. Tara is the goddess of universal compassion and represents virtuous and enlightened action. She is also said to bring about longevity, protect earthly travel, and guard her followers on their spiritual journey to enlightenment. Age: 15th to 16th Century. Height: 17 cm.
