Details: A lovely and rare example of a late 18th to early 19th century ivory seated Buddha, probably from the Northern Thai Kingdom of Lanna. The Buddha is seated in Maravijaya upon a Northern type oval raised pedestal, his right hand reaching to touch the ground while his left hand remains in a meditative position in his lap palm up. His almost Sukhothai styled oval face, displays a state of blissful awareness, expressed through his very deep smile and heavy lidded downcast eyes. Above Buddha’s face is a thin band separating his forehead from the many tight curls of hair which cover his Usnisa and is topped by a Ketumala made up of a tall budded lotus. His robe is worn in the open mode across one of his broad shoulders and follows the chunky contours of his body down to a slightly plumb swollen waist above the slight outline of his undergarment. This image still retains much of its original lacquer and gilding, which gives the piece a certain warmth. This ivory image is very similar to late 18th and early 19th century Rattanakosin period ivory images carved in the Bangkok area, however due to the lotus styled Ketumala, tall oval pedestal and the overall Sukhothai feel of his face it’s safe to say this piece was commissioned in the North of Thailand. Age: Late 18th to early 19th Century. Height: 14 cm.
